What a horrible script. Full of trite action, cliched dialogue, and useless filler. Thank God this was not followed in the actual movie.

A well written script. However the story is rather weak and predictable, slightly improved upon in the movie but not by much.

Petrovski (6 out of 10 )
The script is quite weak. The movie was half decent, more glare than actual drama. De Niro and Reno both brought a good performance. The ending was predictable and Dietra (Irish girl) has the worst accent.

The script was non-traditional. Every character had a backstory that was not told in the film, with Mamet leaving that up to the imagination. It was beautiful in its simplicity, and very Japanese in that much was done without blatantly telling you. Deirdre's accent was actually authenticl- Natascha McElhone's mother was Irish.

I am actually Irish myself and I can assure you that Deirdre's accent was terrible.

I think it's interesting. Zeik picked a great central conceit- the idea of modern Ronin- but his script is a low brow schlocky thriller, mainstream fare, cliched dialogue and paper-thin characters. My guess is Frankenheimer came on-board and saw that the concept suited a more subtle, realist, measured approach, and then brough Mamet on to rewrite it. The version of the script on show here is certainly a pretty poor Shane Black-esque piece of popcorn entertainment (perhaps explaining why Zeik has had such little work since), but it's not hard to see why people thought it could be better than that. Structurally the film which made it to cinemas I find very interesting- for the first 40 minutes or so it goes like this: SET PIECE (Sam entering the bar), a scene or two of plot and character, SET PIECE (the ambush in the tunnel), a scene or two of plot and character, SET PIECE (Sam and Deirdre staking out the hotel), a scene or two of plot and character, etc.

I am not Irish, but I've always heard that Ireland has a wealth of different accents, sometimes so different from one another that it's hard for some folks to understand what other folks are saying. I didn't realize that Natasha wasn't actually Irish, considering how many Irish lasses she's played. So she's actually British. Oh well, if you think hers is a bad Irish accent, then you need to get out more, or I guess, stay in more and watch more movies. J/k Ronin is worth it for two things: The car sequences, and that offbeat dialog that is signature David Mamet ("You worried about your own skin, yeah?" "Yeah, it covers my body").

Ronin is an awesome crime action thriller, it's got lots of intense action, suspense, and double crossing, great movie, I love it.

An awesome heist movie with nonstop action and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and there's also double crossing in it too, heist movie fanatics will really enjoy ronin.
